Al Quaeda is the "big cheese", I think we all agree... But the very nature of the organization is that of an "umbrella" for the overall goal of removing whatever obstacle stands in the way of an extremist Islamic "revival".

The Saudi Royal family are an "obstacle" of sorts, but incredibly corrupt as a whole. This corruption makes them susceptible to political blackmail by the extremists (give us money to finance our values elsewhere, or we'll overthrow you)... The extremists use the Saudis as a political front for interfacing with the west until such a time when they can remove them and face the west (US) as a political force in their own right.

The Saudis may rule the country, but they are puppets of the radical Wahabbi scholars who have control over the education of the youth of SA and seek to extend that influence throughout the muslim world.

Thus, the Wahabbis have to be neutralized.. And the ultimate way of accomplishing that is restoring the Caliphate, by way of the westernized rulership of King Abdullah of Jordan.

However, before than can be accomplished, Iraq must be removed as military power that could be deployed to the assistance of the Saudis. Hence the recent "reapproachment" between the two nations and Saudi restaint against the US forcing a regime change in Baghdad. The Saudis know they may be required to call upon Hussein to support them in the future.

And yes.. a regime change would be difficult, but it appears to be the only possibility of pulling the financial rug out from under the Islamic extremists and to put them on the run. And only the Hasemites have the legitimacy to seize back control over the holy cities...

Thus, the entire affair has to be packaged as a restoration of the Caliphate, in the name of restoring the "heart" of the Islamic faith... Only in that way would the Islamic world accept it..

And I also suspect many Muslims would cheer the fall of the Saudi regime, which has extorted so much money from muslim pilgrims over the many years.
