That's where you're wrong. The majority of validation these days is done at the pre-silicon level, which is where you get your 90%. Post-si wise, when you get the actual part, you should at least be able to boot into Windows within a couple of weeks (barring other problems that aren't even silicon related). That's why I say it doesn't really take much. Most of the other 90%, as you call it, is ensuring stability around corner cases, and rare load conditions.

Another cardinal rule, or "thing that they say", is that if you don't validate it, it doesn't work. You think that AMD is going to cut their validation short and release Hammer early because it's running a few demos without a hitch? Unh-uh.
