Item Pricing Bill Introduced in Senate ... Michigan

retailers.com March 22, 2002

Sen. Joanne Emmons (R-Big Rapids) has introduced a bill seeking reforms of Michigan’s Item Pricing Act, in addition to those proposed in the House.

Senate Bill 1211 is not yet available on the web, but conversations with Sen. Emmons’ office appear positive. The bill seeks to remove the item pricing requirement for retailers who employ electronic shelf labels. It is not yet known if the bill grants exemptions for food and nonprescription medications.

Emmon’s office stated that it is not their intention for the bill to receive consideration in the near future due to the political climate surrounding
the issue.

The bill would apply to all products, including food and nonprescription medications.

If item pricing reform gathers enough support to move later in the year, the proposal is likely to be included in some form in the final package.

A separate reform proposal has been introduced in the House to let retailers provide portable UPC scanners for customers to check prices instead of marking every item. Retailers would be required to demonstrate 98-percent scanner accuracy to be exempt from item pricing.
