Jorj, you actually have to go back further than that to fully understand the problem to the 1940's when it was Briton that occupied both territories. At that time they were under UN mandate to get out and they like Israel now wouldn't do so. Israel under the leadership of Menachem Begin - successfully ousted them using bombs explosives or whatever they could get their hands on. After blowing up the King David hotel killing hundreds including civilians Mr. Begin too was called a terrorist and remained on Britons ten most wanted terrorist list for years.

The problem is that although the UN granted both Israel and the Palestinians statehood and defined territories, Israel has never to this day accepted that. Indeed as recently as a few weeks ago the ruling Likud party in Israel voted that they would never recognize statehood for Palestine. Here is the story on THAT from the Israeli perspective.

Here is the UN resolutions. Just scroll down the timeline after using the link at the end of the next PP.

1947

On 29 Nov The United Nation declares that both the Palestinians State and an Israeli State can exist in Palestine.
1947: UN Partition Plan for Palestine: General Assembly Resolution 181 - Plan to partition Palestine into two states after the British Mandate ended.
The UN voted to grant the Jewish people a homeland in Palestine.

As for the six day war. Contrary to what most people believe it was started when Israel attacked Egypt, Syria and Jordan simultaneously FIRST. Not to say they weren't justified because they felt threatened but its a falsehood to say that Israel was attacked simultaneously by these three Countries. This only occurred AFTER Israel struck first.

Finally in response to your comment or question on the September 11th attack. NO, I don't believe anything justifies that attack or any other attack on civilians that occurs anywhere by terrorists of any kind. There is no doubt though that it occurred because of our support of Israel. Bin Laden himself said so on his first video tape. That was a heavy hit America took. The price we paid for support of decency and democracy and freedom. One most Americans although deeply pained wouldn't change because of our deep commitments to the concepts of freedom for all and our support of Israel.

That doesn't mean as Americans though that we should continue to blindly support Israel while they continue to build settlements and humiliate the Palestinians and ignore the UN resolutions that have continually decreed there will be a Palestinian State. This issue must be resolved before it sparks another world war and the entire world should be bringing draconian pressure on both sides to do so imo.
