"so Enron wouldn't have collapsed had they expensed the exercise of stock options?"

Oh man, you must be reading between the lines...do I hear "Intel"?

I do not know much about Enron, but expensing the
exercise of stock options would make it tougher to
run other fishy bookkeeping activities, and maybe
somebody would fold earlier under a bigger size of
illegal deals, or maybe even somebody would not
even consider steeping over a bigger line, and maybe
the whole scheme would be not feasible in first place.

"Regardless of where you stand on the issue"

I stand where I am for some three-four years,
same place. And was severely ridiculed on the stock
options issue here on numerous occasions. Still standing.
