I think it would mean about the same today as then.

In the '60's, I would have read it not as a straightforward equation, but rather as a vaguely Zen exhortation to adjust the expectations term to zero; i.e. to realize that happiness equals reality and expectations are pointless. The Buddha said human suffering is identical with desire.

That advice (which I strongly believe was the intent of whoever wrote it in the '60s) would not be well-received by Gordon Gecko and the "greed is good" crowd. If greed is good, expectations can't be bad.
