"why would the comments attributed to AMD in this article have ever been made"

My take on all this is that the Opteron performance
is highly overhyped, and raises too high expectations.
There is no free lunch in performance anymore, IMO.
As I expressed on several occasions, the Opteron
architecture cannot perform dramatically faster than
any other existing architecture - Athlon or P4, even
given the embedded memory controller. Now, if things are
not polished up to full-blown specifications (I mostly
suspect the HyperTransport, and maybe more of the
DDR memory controller itself), the overall system
performance may not be impressive. BTW, same concerns
were expressed when first Athlon systems were sampled to
some board manufacturers, with extremely conservative
BIOS settings and lots of performance-enhancing features
disabled, both in the CPU and in the North bridge.
