Asian jewlery is often 22 carats or sometimes with alloys it gets close to 24 carats, the so called Cham Chat jewlery of asian cultures is really much more of a savings or investment purchase. The woman bring in their old jewlery to the gold smith at the souk and after he weighs it he will allow them to buy new jewlery of the same weight for a small 10-15% mark up to cover his profit and the tooling of the jewlery. Of course the jewlery is often fairly straight forward in it's fabrication, although often quite beautiful.
