But it mystifies me in light of the circumstances how you and any other reasonably intelligent person could continue to aid this known and confirmed scumbag in any way.

I don't think that those who are giving aid and comfort are intending to do that, although that may be the net effect. I think that they are just honoring other priorities in human interaction like civility or inclusiveness. They may not see the extent to which their own priorities confound yours or they may simply think their own are more important to uphold.
