OPERATION NORTHWOODS, 40th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Howdy TLC,

Re: I guess I should stick to jokes and stuff, eh?

I agree with Milton Friedman, we should be "free to choose". Tis I who should stick to the jokes......

Now about that "Knock, Knock" joke.......

TLC: Yes, I understand the word "hypocrisy" It's from a Greek word meaning "to pretend".

Speaking of pretending......

I'm reading James Bamford's "Body of Secrets". I'm up to the discussion of the Kennedy administration and the difficulty that paranoid right wing JCS generals like Lemnitzer, and staff generals like Edwin Walker had with the notion of civilian control of the military. Bamford mentions that these John Birch Society types actually created a plan called "Operation Northwoods", the purpose of which was to create a terrorist operation in the U.S. and on the high seas, the purpose of which was two-fold. One, to have a successful military invasion of Cuba, and more importantly, to remove civilian control of the military in the U.S. and in fact to take over the government from the likes of the Kennedys and other social welfare advocates, claiming that they were "communistic".

The planning for "Operation Northwoods" included a significant level of military involvement in clandestine operations within the borders of the U.S. involving the murder of innocent citizens in order to make a military solution more palatable to a panicked, albeit deceived, population.

Do you think they've finally been able to carry out this plan, 40 years after it was first conceived?

Here's a scan of the Bamford text:

And some other verifying sources:

ABC: "Code named Operation Northwoods, the plans reportedly included...... orchestrating violent terrorism in U.S. cities.
The plans were developed as ways to trick the American public......"

""These were Joint Chiefs of Staff documents. The reason these were held secret for so long is the Joint Chiefs never wanted to give these up because they were so embarrassing," Bamford told ABCNEWS.com.

"The whole point of a democracy is to have leaders responding to the public will, and here this is the complete reverse, the military trying to trick the American people into a war that they want but that nobody else wants."

"The Joint Chiefs even proposed using the potential death of astronaut John Glenn during the first attempt to put an American into orbit "

Are we are on the road to an anti-democratic autocracy here in the U.S? It seems so to me. Of the last 14 important international treaties, the U.S. has steadfastly maintained its unilateralist stance. Regarding "The Rights of Children" treaty, only two nations have failed to sign the agreement. Somalia and the U.S. We're in good company there, aren't we? I guess we like seeing the third world's children chained to our sewing machines.
