Sigh, you've been reading Yousef's posts too often. Assuming that AMD does what they claim they will be doing, they will use UMC's equipment to develop their process at the 65nm node, not give up process development and go strictly over to UMC's as Yousef likes to pretend.
-- That wouldn't be good. If anyone thinks that UMC will let AMD "use UMC's equipment", they"re dreaming. And If AMD is not fully on board with UMC until 2 more Process Generations have been implemented, then I think that they are going to be in deep do-do.
Yeah, AMD will be using UMC at 130 and 90nm for fabbing chips, but they will also be using Dresden at those nodes, I would guess for the higher value chips. At 130 and 90nm, UMC is there if they see the demand expanding to the point that Dresden cannot handle it, and if that's the case, then even if they only make $1 per chip on the UMC output, it's worth it.
-- The problem with this from a Process Engineering Standpoint, is that it is most unlikely that UMC is using the same Process Equipment that AMD is using for 0.13u up to this point. Converting a Process to a different set of tools, while at the same time transferring it to a different location, is a bitch.... take my word for it. AMD better have their fingers crossed. I guess that Copy Exactly doesn't look quite so stupid now...... Does it.
