Not again, Stan. Strong earthquake rocks Taiwan

A powerful undersea earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale rocked Taiwan, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The tremor hit around 0:46 am (1646 GMT Tuesday), shaking buildings and waking people from their sleep.

Its epicenter was located at 59 kilometers (36 miles) east of Taiwan's eastern coastal city of Hualien, 5.7 kilometers under the sea surface.

Seismologists at the central weather bureau said the sea had reduced the destructive power of the tremor.

"It was one of the biggest aftershocks of the 6.8 Richter scale earthquake which hit on March 31, and we expect more aftershocks of today's (Wednesday's) magnitude to come in the next few weeks," seismology director Kuo Kai-wen said.

The March 31 earthquake killed five people and forced a two-and-a-half-month halt to the construction of what is planned to be the world's tallest building, the Taipei Financial Centre, for safety checks.

Kuo said the power of Wednesday's quake equalled that of an atomic bomb.

Police and firefighters received no reports of casualties or damage.
