It is notable that the spread of Christianity was done mostly thru the hermetics and monks though ...as after the romans did convert and most of the Empire did as well, the feeling was to get back to the source teaching , that the message had been dilluted and lost in popularization.

1500ys ago , they were also trying to get back to that
"old time religion " ...

Chritianity is in essence, a very monastic teaching , of giving up the things of the world and becoming unnattached of desire and ego , and being "married" to the spirit etc etc.
