if you had a billion dollars (or even a hundred million) in one stock, wouldn't you want some diversification? nobody in their right mind would stick 100% of a billion-dollar portfolio into one stock (you'd quickly get sued if you tried to run a pension fund that way), yet we routinely demand executives to do something similar.

while i am no admirer of US corporate executives, i do think it is rather unreasonable that we expect them to have so much of their net worth tied up in one stock. on the other hand, typically their net worths are so high only because they were overpaid to begin with. (obviously a Dr. J type is in a different category since he was a founder.)
