RE:"That idea would never fly. Political opponents would claim that flat tax advocates want to "raise taxes on the poor" and/or "lower taxes on the rich.""

Oh yeah, everyone with their little pet deductions would throw a fit. Charities would moan...the real estate lobby would bring out their radio ads like the last time a flat tax came up. Congress wouldn't like having their hands cuffed to manipulate the economy through selective taxation etc.. Lord forbid "the right" to cash in big through stock options dissappeared...

Never mind the poor working sap who has to make up for all the lost revenues doled out by the funky tax laws.

As far as the poor...I believe there could be a standard income that below that you didn't have to pay as much.

As far as the "gift to the rich"...well the Dems love those buzz phrases but little do the sheeple know that over about 54k their govie starts to consider them "rich". After taxing you to death and making you feel poor they bring the spin out again.

Right now, Bush is spending us into oblivion with this terrorist thing without even getting to the roots of the problem...and youz are paying for it. Neither side is giving an inch in the middle east and we are right there funding it...directly and indirectly. Can't say anything though...political correct ya know.
