Kris,
I have been involved over the years in numerous businesses and from a philosophical point of view there are 2 approaches to making money:
1) You innovate something totally new and if you are lucky you revolutionize the world and make a ton of money. However if your new product doesnt catch on you go out of business.
2) You look around and see a product that is doing extremely well and making a ton of money. You then say to yourself Im gonna get involved in this business and only do it better.
The second method is a sure way to make money the first is a long shot gamble.
I have held SGI since early 1996 while they have completely overhauled their business and have seen my investment go down 20%. Like you I hope this is only temporary and indeed they do hit the jackpot with there new approach.
On the other hand if I had bought Dell who does nothing really innovative but make and sell microsoft and intel products - only they do it better than anyone - instead of losing 20% on by investment I would be making 1000%.
Hmmm sometimes I talk to myself and question which business approach is better.
