Thomas, this journalist is either not aware or else chooses to keep quiet on the criteria that the British established for partitioning India and Pakistan. The kings as they were called were free to choose which country they wanted to merge with India or Pakistan. According to that criteria the Hindu king chose to merge with India, and those in erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) chose to merge with Pakistan. This all happened in 1947. Was the UN around at that time? Do they have any business in altering what took place before their existence?

Some Muslim insurgents, who wanted to gain power in Kashmir immediately after the partition failed to do so. Then the sought the help of the Pakistani army to get to the seat of power by force. Pakistani army moved into Kashmir. To halt their advance, the Indian army moved into Kashmir and that is how the Line of Control (LoC) was established.

The Guardian article talked about China. It would be interesting to see what China's reaction would be if the Indian army moved into Pakistan (China's ally) to curb cross-border terrorism.

Pakistan is the epiceneter of terrorism now and today. Get rid of the terrorists first and then see if the talk of KAshmir by the Kashmiri people come up at all. As I said the Kashmiris rather be independent instead of India or Pakistan. But Pakistan would not allow that.
