Shortly after the murders, Tony claimed to have known Chalem. If I remember correctly, Chalem either worked at the same brokerage Tony did (early in Tony's career as a broker) or he worked for a rival brokerage, and Tony had met him during the course of normal business. In either event, Tony didn't describe himself as being close to Chalem, merely that he knew Chalem at one time. He also thought he might know the other murdered guy (whose name escapes me at the moment), but he wasn't sure at the time.
