But "free" doesn't necessarily translate into "good".

True, but the opposite also applies. Free does not imply bad. I use several apps that are free which I find very satisfactory. I think the computer literacy level of the user has a lot to do with which program the end user should use. As an example I would site the differences in a couple of free firewalls. ZoneAlarm (which I use) is very easy to configure whereas Tiny Personal Firewall (which is recommended as very good on quite a few sites) is very difficult to configure for someone not very comfortable working on their computer.

There are a ton of very well written and easy-to-use software programs on the internet built by people with no other motivation than helping fellow computer users with their machines. As an added bonus, the programmer learns more about his "art" by doing this sort of thing. There are many people on this thread whose sole motivation in participating is to help beginners and increase their own computing knowledge in the process.

I don't believe in unnecessary risks either but really don't feel that I am at risk using the free programs that I do use. I trust that ZA is protecting me from internet scans and I try to stay informed on the latest viral threats and exercise care in what emails I open and what sites I visit.

FWIW...my 2¢
