It's good to see the news on the latest sale by CMRC. Listened to company annual meeting yesterday and was impressed by positive comments from Hoffman. Do not recall him sounding so optimistic in the past. Commented that 5.0 release was seeing traction and takeoffs. Seeing deals in the pipeline. 5.0 was announced in late Jan but not into general availability until March (mentioned by Hoffman in response to analyst query during 1Q earnings call). Thus release date likely contributed to poor 1Q earnings since customers waiting for newest release. In yesterday call, Hoffman mentioned that pipeline deals were in the 6-9 month timeframe and he predicted significant pickup in sales for 4Q02.

Also of significance was his comment about positive impact on software industry as web services become an industry standard. Web service standards have been endorsed by MSFT, SAP, CMRC, SUNW, SEBL. Hoffman equated these standards as similar to IBM endorsement of SQL database standards which resulted in the growth in the database industry of ORCL, IBM and Sybase products during the 80's and 90's. Web service standards will enable various vendor software to pass information to other products through a common standards based protocal. This will reduce customer integration costs as they bring in new vendor software. Something that should have been agreed upon by the vendors 20+ years ago. I agree with Hoffman that this could really enable the software industry to achieve significant growth. CMRC will have their software web service enabled in 6.0 release scheduled for year end.
