Dumbmoney, Re: "It'll outperform Sun. Will it outperform the Pentium 4?"

If by Pentium 4, you mean Xeon MP, which has the benefit of extra cache and Hyperthreading, then it's hard to say. I think it will, but it might be close when Intel launches Gallatin with 2MB of cache and faster clock frequencies. The difference will be that large, multiprocessor systems will begin requiring memory configurations that will eventually exceed the 64GB architectural limit of the Xeon, and Itanium 2 will be the only other choice that offers comparable performance. And as competitors start releasing their own products, Itanium 2 systems will be upgradeable to Madison processors, which will have even higher performance.

Large businesses that want to trust that their systems will be able to handle demanding tasks in the future will look for these capabilities, I think, as it will eventually mean a lower TCO for them.
