I was really into this a few years ago...course I had some money then!...and found some beautiful pieces that needed nothing but tons of oil and elbow grease. I found them all in little obscure shops. If it said "antiques", I didn't go in! But my favorite piece is an old sewing machine that my Nanny sat at and treadled away making all of our little girl clothes. When she died, I took her old treadle and made all my maternity dresses on it and felt like my Nanny was there with me through it all.
