The difference will be that large, multiprocessor systems will begin requiring memory configurations that will eventually exceed the 64GB architectural limit of the Xeon, and Itanium 2 will be the only other choice that offers comparable performance.

Correct. But it won't be the "only other choice" after Intel adds 64-bit addressing to its x86 processors. Then Itanium will have to sink or swim on the merits.
