Sonki - Re: "Do you know when Intel will start prodcuing 12" wafers! "

Intel is expanding their D2 Fab in Santa Clara to allow room for a 12 in. (actually, 300 mm) wafer development/pilot line.

This development will begin this year as they add equipment and start to figure out the process and equipment related issues. Note - Polished Silicon Wafers will be a third MAJOR VARIABLE as silicon suppliers grapple with the intricacies of making these 300 MM pizza-size wafers.

The economies due to the area increase are 2.25 to 1.

Initially, the cost to produce these first 300 MM wafers will be mind-boggling! All new equipment is required to handle, store, process, measure, etc. these wafers. Quartz tubes 13 to 14" diameter and furnaces to match have to be ordered abd installed. Wafer scanners/steppers that can handle a 300 mm x 300 mm stepping stage are also a necessity - probably costing 3 or 4 million dollars per machine. Ion implnaters with giant stages, multiple chamber thin film deposition and etch systems with 300 mm capability need to be purchased, etc.

I believe Intel will try to dovetail the 300 mm wafer program with the 0.18 micron process development project, aimed at making Merced devices. Expect small scale production to begin in early to mid 1999, at the earliest.
