It took TWO OF THEM before the made that radio broadcast announcing their surrender! TWO OF THEM! Not one! TWO!

I dunno how much it was appropriate to read into that. The era of instantaneous mass communications and CNN and so forth was a long way off at that point. There were news reports that day, to be sure. There were American announcements of this terrible and powerful new weapon. But how much the Japanese high command could have learned about what was really happening on the ground, and what it all meant, between August 6 and the morning of August 9 is questionable. There is a powerful moral hindsight case for saying that the Americans should have said, "we have more of these bombs. We will drop another one in a week (or two or a month or whatever) if you do not capitulate."

Then give the Japanese time to go into Hiroshima and see how awful it really was. I assume you read John Hershey's (sp?) book on the subject.
