For better or worse (and I mostly think it's better), many things that have been "standard operating procedure" are now being questioned. Even relatively innocuous stuff like minor "smoothing" of earnings, that were encouraged by Wall Street and tolerated by the SEC and accountants are now being highlighted as unacceptable.

No doubt that Oracle didn't do anything that other companies didn't do as well. Also no doubt that these companies took advantage of every known vulnerability in the system, including Grey Davis's huge appetite for campaign contributions. But in the current climate (post 9/11, post-Enron), people are more inclinced to give the government some leeway, and not inclined to believe in the honesty of corporate leadership. In most cases they're wrong, but that's the environment. We're not in the dotcom bubble anymore where corporations were making everybody rich, while simultaneously filling the tax coffers of governments and everybody ws happy. Companies will have to adjust or have their reputations tarnished.
