A longer answer on DirecTV phone line:

DirecTV with a Sony SAT-B2 receiver allows
me to fill up on pay per view with no
phone line: A couple times a year the
machine will say something about my
access card being full or being invalid--
plugging the phone line back in allows the
reciver to dial automatically late at night
to upload my purchases.

The drawback, if you order a show and then
find up your access card is full, you may
have to call customer service just before
your movie is about to show. They apparently
can send a code which forces your receiver
to dial up on command, but it can take a few
minutues...so you miss the first part of your
show.

That said, the first five minutes is free anyway,
so you really shouldn't miss anything.

Finally, I wouldn't be surprised if DirecTV does
require a constant hook up with newer systems.
My SAT-B2 is a few years old, and has been sitting
in the closet for months now: We just don't even
watch Teevee anymore, too much crap on we don't
want our two year old to see: You don't dare even
flip channels with a toddler in the room, geeze
broadcast teevee is awful, the commercials will
give you nightmares.

Blockbuster has five day rentals on some DVDs.
The best bang for your buck, except of course
for matinees at the theatre.
