I didn't say bigotry is dead. Try to dig up UK stories on chains and pick ups trucks and barbed wire. By comparison to the US, it's a hell of a lot better.

No, you didn't say "Bigotry is dead," but you did say, "If you treat people with dignity [and don't kill them], you can make ethnic jokes, etc. without people over reacting."

My point was simple, and it wasn't that the UK is a less violent society than ours, it was that the claim that in the UK "you treat people with dignity" is kind of dubious.

The horrible "barbed wire" crime against the gay man you cited aroused enormous horror on the part of the American public. I'm sure that such reports as these of deaths and dismemberments of gays in Britain had the same effect there:
