I think that this one of Friedman's better columns recently. Nice technique, using the 'extremest' politician to make his point. He misses the flip side of his argument and I think this is critical. Yes, This is a war of ideas and we must work with the Arab countries to open them the restoration and modernity. At the same time they are battling with their ideas. Right now they are winning. Everytime we give up a single freedom to protect ourselves from terrorism we sell the very thing thing we want to export. Every inch we give is a mile they take. The answer to September 11 is to draw a line in the sand. Freedom works. The human spirit seeks freedom and accepts responsibility. We will not compromise a single one of our principles to protect those who would do us harm. We will never bend our minds and our spirits to their will. We will defeat them. We will not sit and wait for another attack. We will apply the resources harvested from our freedoms: knowledge, curiosity, ingenuity, persistence. We will innovate and apply all our technology to protect ourselves without once selling out our freedom. We understand that it is not us they attack, it is the ideas we stand for that threaten them. We will not weaken than idea a whit. Ever. Like the the founding fathers friends in France, we will share and spread our ideals and ideas. We will mentor and support those who ask. We will light the spirit of freedom anywhere we are invited. This is what America stands for and we shall never surrender. Paul
