Hammer looks to give AMD another competitive advantage over Intel. Intel has nothing but money, it's been running on nothing but momentum for 3 years. Being able to heavily outspend AMD has kept Intel going, but Intel has now burned up about half of its reserves, while AMD is financially as strong as it ever was. AMD is already part way through the conversion to SOI - Intel will have to spend money like water to catch up, just as it did with copper. And, this time, the money may not be there.
