I had that experience as well. At the time I was pleased because it wasn't cool to be ethnic and I wanted to fit in, but I later regretted the missed opportunity of another language. I studied Slovak for a while in my forties, but it's much harder then. Particularly with a language that declines not only nouns and pronouns but adjectives and has as many irregular verbs as French. My grandparents spoke English that was adequate for dealing with a small child, but when they got old and reverted to their first language, I couldn't communicate with them at all. I would have liked to have heard stories that I was too cool to listen to when I was young.
