Slovak is a tough language; lots of dialects to complicate the matter as well. The whole region is interesting though. Most of the immigrants identified themselves as Hungarian. But everyone knew they weren't real Hungarians [Maygar]. Some referred to themselves as Austrian, Carpaytho-Rusyn for some of the far eastern regions, and Galacian. I've probably missed a few. My folks came out of [today's names] Snina and Bela nad Cirochou, on the eastern border at the foothills of the Carpathians, a short distance from the Ukraine and Poland.
