McNamara has now admitted he lied about the chances of winning. He advised strategies he knew would lose, and covered up intelligence he knew was deceptive.
Spitting on soldiers is an emotional image, but is also a lie, since most protesters supported the individual soldiers, and protested the policy-makers who lied to the American people.
Lying was, and often still is, SOP in government, the military, and most large bureacracies if they think they can get away with it. The only information I'll believe, if it is self-serving, is that which I can confirm, especially if it can be traced back to a self-serving source, or media management.
The only way to "win" the war was to annihilate the population. That's not a win, that's practically genocide, since it would have been 1/2 the people. Not a very American method of resolving conflict. Instead, since we left, they've settled into a more peaceful society, trading with the rest of the world.
A good lesson to be learned and applied in the future. |
