Tom, unfortunately the hate-filled left has taken a legitimate concern "how could we have prevented the events of 9/11, and turned in into a grotesque partisan mudslinging contests.

The way I see it basically two things went wrong with our intelligence gathering systems.

1. The FBI became solely focused as an organization on arresting people after the crime has been committed, instead of building internal systems of intelligence gathering to prevent it. Combine that focus with the politically correct fear of racial profiling and you have an organization unable to respond effectively toward terrorist threats.

2. The very design of organizational hierarchies is to act as filters that narrow the range of items which surface to the top. Inevitably, as information winds its way up the hierarchy, messages are either garbled or not received at all. In other words, the FBI and CIA have become too bureaucratic.

No conspiracies, just mistakes which happen when an organization loses its focus and direction.

The left's hatred toward Bush blinds them to these simple realities.
