Lightspan Successfully Delivers First Online Year-End Tests in Utah

SAN DIEGO, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Lightspan, Inc. (Nasdaq:LSPN), a leading provider of high-quality educational products and services used in schools and homes to help increase academic achievement and enhance teacher professional development, announced today that it has successfully completed the first-ever online delivery of year-end tests for students in Utah.

Ten schools in five Utah school districts participated in the state- authorized program, using Lightspan eduTest Assessment, which delivered and administered the state's year-end test called the Utah Criterion Referenced Test (CRT).

Utah state representative Matt Throckmorton said: "Our experience with Lightspan's online testing system demonstrates that the technology exists for states to help their schools meet federal, state and local student achievement standards. This partnership with Lightspan is an example of how Utah will be able to maintain its position as an educational leader."

In addition to the five Utah school districts using Lightspan eduTest Assessment for delivery of their year-end tests, over 60 schools in Utah also use the online assessment system to administer regular, formative classroom assessments that help teachers adjust instruction in a timely fashion according to specific academic needs.

Randy Merrill, Assistant Superintendent in the Provo school district, said: "Especially with the testing and accountability requirements of the new No Child Left Behind act, it is more important than ever that our schools get accurate, timely information on student progress. Lightspan eduTest Assessment proved to be a very secure and efficient way to get this information. The program was a big success and we plan to expand online testing with Lightspan eduTest Assessment to all of our elementary and middle schools next year."

Lightspan Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Kernan said: "Lightspan has a solid track record as a provider of high quality formative and diagnostic assessment tools, with assessment products in over one thousand schools. This relationship with schools in Utah also positions Lightspan as a deliverer of statewide assessments, which will be increasingly important as states develop strategies for meeting the increasing demands for accountability and student achievement as required under the No Child Left Behind act."
