The US deployment here in the Philippines may be moving to another level. Wolfowitz and his entourage are coming to town, and it is generally expected that they will push for more aggressive deployments of US troops in Basilan. So far the Americans have been engaged only in training behind the scenes; they want permission to accompany actual field missions. The exercise is supposed to be over July 30, and extending it will require consent of the Philippine legislature, which has mixed feelings about the whole thing.

Local newspapers today were claiming that the US is asking for permission to deploy a carrier task force in the Sulu Sea, in Philippine waters. That seems ridiculous overkill to me, at least for the mission as stated so far. If that happens, there will be 600 American and 3000 Philippine troops, backed by a carrier task force, chasing around 80 bandits that have are holding 2 Americans and a Filipino hostage. Makes me wonder if the mission is to be expanded, and if so, how so. Interesting times....
