"I'm not sure the crying is a critical component."

Crying is not critical. It is merely the most identifiable of the range of attributes we can associate with feeling bad. I have one daughter who loves a good cry. She adjusts very quickly and easily to regrettable situations. She gets over things very easily and moves on as a better person for it. I have another daughter who rarely crys and has a difficult time adjusting to regrettable situations; but when she does adjust, she has a very rational and articulate understanding of the circumstances. I don't have a problem with crying or not crying, I have two shoulders that are available when and if needed.

"If they do enjoy the process, that makes a bit more sense.

"But it seems a wasteful expenditure of energy, if people don't enjoy the process." Under certain circumstances it could be considered neglectful for a care provider not to spend the energy, enjoyable or not.
