Ice, I've had my garage door open by itself a couple of times. Here's
the explanation: the automatic opener and the receiving unit (mounted
on the garage ceiling) have DIP-switches set to a code like abcdefg,
where each letter can be either a 1 or a 0. The installers - being lazy - had left both units at the factory setting, which is 0000000.
I reset both to a different code like 1 0 1 1 0 0 1 (same code for each) and have had no accidental garage door openings since.
A code like 0000000 or 1111111 looks much like a sine wave when transmitted through the air. So some neighbor with an electronic toy
or any other sine wave of the right frequency looks to the receiver unit on the garage door like the signal from the door control unit.
But 1 0 1 1 0 0 1 does not look like a sine wave - and so is harder to receive accidentally.
You can check the code on the garage door opener yourself and see if it is all ones or all zeros. If yes, change it to something else, making sure switch settings match on both units.
I don't think a blown transformer could be the cause, because it runs at a frequency too low to broadcast.(60 Hz)
Please check the garage door control and let me know what you find.

The TV turning on by itself I can't explain.

You lead an interesting life. <G>
