Actually, that's not the case. Federal prisoners rarely have access to computers, and, if they do, they are monitored and restricted to research or word processing. The rationale is quite simple. We've all read about cons creating havoc with phones, e.g., credit card scams, etc. Imagine what they could do with a computer connected to the internet. Instead of lifting weights, they'd be lifting money all over the place.
