Martin thinks he is looking good to the electorate. Chretien thinks that makes him look bad. Chretien doesn't need Martin to make him look bad. Martin is another acquisitive Liberal. He looks solid, but so far he has not been judged on any brilliant actions, which suggests he is in the camp of trying to avoid any gross political mistakes. Whether this makes him smart or just slippery remains to be seen.

When you see a leader who can duck and dodge, but whose lieutenants all seem to come to unavoidable embarrassments of the most egregious kind of which their previous armoured reputations cannot withstand, it becomes apparent that the structure of the edifice has been planned such that it crumbles from the base, leaving the top intact. This kind of political redoubt it seems, has been well planned with the operating principle of vanity being paramount.
