Adjusting your behavior makes you feel good, in some way/at some level, or you wouldn't do it. Bad feelings, or emotions, exchanged for good ones is the transaction that precipitates the adjustment. Emotions are the engines of behavior. That's how they evolved. That's rudimentary evolutionary psychology, and maybe you dismiss that category of evolutionary theory. I don't.

Speaking of evolutionary psychology, I've mentioned before the book The Moral Animal, by Robert Wright. It's unfortunately titled, since it sounds stodgy and lecturish, but in fact is elegantly and flowingly written and fascinating. I can't imagine that it wouldn't be fascinating to anyone.
