Lucent Technologies Announces Industry's Highest Port Density Universal Gateway

APX 8100 Universal Gateway Provides IP Dial-Up Remote Access, VoIP And VPN services

ATLANTA. GA--(INTERNET WIRE)--Jun 4, 2002 -- SUPERCOMM 2002 -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU - news) today announced a highly scalable and reliable universal gateway that enables service providers to cut their operational and capital expenses while providing new revenue-generating services for their business and residential customers such as dial-up Internet Protocol (IP) remote access and voice over IP (VoIP).

The APX(TM) 8100 Universal Gateway is targeted at large carriers, wholesale service providers and Internet service providers (ISPs) with demanding voice and data IP services requirements like managed modem applications. Supporting as many as 12 DS-3's or 8,064 calls (a rack can support as many as 24,192 universal ports), the APX 8100 is built to offer hundreds of VoIP and remote access services with integrated carrier-grade reliability. Its universal port technology allows service providers to support voice, data, fax and VPN calls on any port at any time using a single digital signal processor (DSP) module.

The APX 8100 is an integrated component of Lucent's circuit-to-packet and SIP (session initiation protocol) strategies (Please see separate news release on Lucent SIP Forum announcement).

SIP allows voice, video and data calls to be set up between IP-based devices. Because of its global standards body support and development-friendly attributes, the SIP protocol promises to quickly deliver many new and potentially lucrative services to carriers including interoperability with best-in-class applications such as intelligent SIP phones.

In addition, the APX 8100 is a H.248/MEGACO packet trunking gateway allowing carriers to connect to Lucent Softswitch-based networks with support for wholesale Internet call diversion, VoIP transit, voice VPNs, and other subscriber services.

Attendees at SUPERCOMM 2002 can view the new APX 8100 in the Lucent booth #30848 and the existing APX 1000 and MAX TNTâ Universal Gateways in the SIP Forum booth #12963. The SIP-based Universal Gateways demonstrate how service providers can cost-effectively add SIP-based voice services to their existing infrastructure currently being used for consumer and corporate dial-up remote access services. The APX 8100, APX 8000, APX 1000 and MAX TNTâ gateways are fully interoperable with various third-party intelligent SIP phones.

"The APX 8100 continues Lucent's market leadership in providing service providers the most reliable and scalable universal gateways," said Linda Manchester, vice president and general manager, Lucent's Universal Gateway business. "The high-port density features in the APX 8100 enable service providers to lower their network and operational costs while adding IP-based VoIP and VPN services."

The APX 8100 also features G.711, G.729a+b and G.723.1 audio codecs that are commonly used in Internet Call Waiting, PC-to-phone and bandwidth optimization applications. The gateway maintains a consistent level of performance for all the applications. It also includes new OC-3 and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces that reduce interconnection costs.

In addition, the APX 8100 includes optional SS7 (Softswitch) integration, V.92 and V.90 modem protocols and VoIP calling card and trunking services requiring MEGACO/H.248, IPDC, H.323 or SIP protocols.

The new APX 8100 builds upon Lucent's No. 1 market leadership in worldwide universal port shipments in the first quarter of 2002, according to reports from Cahners In-Stat, Infonetics Research and Synergy Research Group.

Lucent has shipped more than 35 million ports of its MAX TNT®, APX 1000 and APX 8000 Universal Gateway products to the world's largest service providers, including Sprint, Tiscali and Level 3 Communications, Inc.

The APX 8100 will be available in the third quarter. Entry-level pricing starts at $55,000 and includes the basic hardware, redundant power supplies, chassis, and shelf controller module. The redundant components in the APX 8100 enable service providers to enhance their network reliability.
