Varian Semiconductor Achieves Milestone with Shipment of 800th E-Series Ion Implanter to Samsung Electronics GLOUCESTER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 2002--Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq: VSEA - News), the leading supplier of ion implantation systems, today announced that it has shipped its 800th E-Series ion implanter.
A proven workhorse and the most successful implanter in the industry, the single wafer E-Series implanter has led the industry in process control and yield enhancements. The 800th EHP-500 medium current system was delivered to Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. for advanced device production in its fab in Giheung, Korea.
"Customers, such as Samsung Electronics, who purchase Varian Semiconductor's single wafer systems, reinforce our global leadership in the ion implant market," said Ernest Godshalk, president and chief operating officer of Varian Semiconductor. "Our continuous improvement processes and upgrade programs have allowed our customers to extend their return on investment and enabled the E-Series tools to lead medium current ion implant technology for over a decade. This has contributed to our 67% market share in the medium current ion implant segment according to a Dataquest report. Achieving the 800th shipment milestone is a reflection of the advantages of single wafer processing for ion implantation."
Varian Semiconductor's E-series tools are the most commercially successful ion implanters of all time, and they were the foundation of the development of the single wafer VIISta platform. Varian Semiconductor has translated the process advantages of the single wafer, parallel ion beam system across the medium current, high current and high energy segments into its VIISta platform of ion implanters. As a result, there is process transferability among each tool in the VIISta platform. This allows maximum scheduling flexibility for both 200mm and 300mm fabs, ensures that the VIISta systems are operated at the highest utilization rates and maximizes the economic benefits of the platform to customers.
