Fred Hickey describes a 'denial, procrastination and panic' response to the Y2K problem. This is all too plausible! But IMHO nobody knows which way the panic will influence events. It may lead to panic patching of legacy systems, or conversely, to panic buying of new systems. He thinks companies won't increase overall IT spending. If mission-critical systems break, they will have to and they will. Good hunting for COBOL programmers, consultants AND boxmakers. Also for companies capable of doing enterprise-wide IT hand-holding (such as IBM, HWP, and CPQ).
