Savant, I agree with you. You are right on every count.

1) Some artists profit handsomely from their copyrights. (TRUE)
2) It is virtually the only protection available to them. (I AGREE)
3) I've learned one thing in life...nothing is 'fair'. (RIGHT)

But none of these things are at issue.

My initial comment was: "It seems strange to me that, although there is no shortage of people to complain about the deleterious effects of institutionalized greed, so little effort is put into understanding how our laws foster and reward it."

I later cited the extension of copyright as an instance of how our laws foster and reward institutionalized greed. I felt that way then, and I feel that way now ... albeit an unpopular view.
