Hifn Processors Help Colubris Networks Deliver Strong Wireless LAN Security Secure Wireless LAN Access Point Routers Feature Hifn Hardware Acceleration for IPSec and L2TP Internet Protocols LOS GATOS, Calif. and LAVAL, Quebec, June 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Network security and flow classification market leader Hifn(TM) (Nasdaq: HIFN - News) announced today that its security processors are used by Colubris Networks Inc. to implement strong wireless security in the CN1050 secure wireless LAN routers. Colubris Networks has overcome the inherent weakness of WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy), the IEEE 802.11 encryption protocol, through the application of IPSec and L2TP Internet protocols and Hifn security processors.
(Photo: newscom.com ) "Integrating virtual private network capabilities into wireless LAN systems is critical to meeting enterprise security needs," said John Pescatore, Vice President for Internet Security with Gartner, Inc. "Since performance is critical, hardware acceleration will be required for enterprise class applications."
The CN1050 provides the strongest wireless security available by creating secure VPN (Virtual Private Networks) tunnels from the access point to each wireless client while running the Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) over IPSec. The router supports PPTP (Point to Point Protocol), IPSec and L2TP over IPSec using 3DES and ARC4 encryption.
"We chose the Hifn security processors because they helped define the security landscape for virtual private networks," says Pierre Trudeau, Chief Technology Officer and Founder of Colubris Networks Inc. "We are in the process of defining the security landscape for wireless LANs, and Hifn has a key role to play in this rapidly emerging market."
Hifn is enabling solutions for truly secure wireless LANs. The Colubris approach is the most secure solution because it implements strong layer 3 security using proven Internet standard VPN IPsec techniques. Hifn also continues to contribute to the process of fixing the IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard's compromised WEP security. Hifn's chief scientist and leading cryptographer, Dr. Doug Whiting, is participating in the 802.11 TGi task group, whose goal is to develop a fix to WEP and a long term solution for stronger security
"We weren't surprised when a major networking magazine test nominated the CN1050 a World Class product," says Doug Makishima, Hifn vice president of marketing. "The Colubris solution augurs well for the future of wireless communications, and we are proud to be part of a solution that restores confidence in wireless LANs. The use of standard VPN techniques represents a tremendous IT management offload because it immediately eliminates security concerns and allows the leveraging of existing VPN tools, interoperable infrastructure and management techniques."
The Hifn security processor performs multi-algorithm encryption acceleration on a single chip, with a powerful on-board IKE (Internet Key Exchange) processor for public key operations. Supported protocols include IPSec, IPPCP, PPTP, L2TP, PPP, and IKE. Algorithms that can be performed by the security processors used by Colubris Networks include DES, 3-DES, and ARC4 encryption, RSA, DSA, and DH public key, SHA-1 and MD5 authentication, and LZS and MPPC compression. The microchip also generates the true hardware random numbers that are an essential part of the public key infrastructure. Symmetric and public key processing is performed concurrently to enable low-latency performance.
