There was a story last night on our local news about the search for a rape suspect, accompanied by an artist's composite of how several witnesses described him. The descriptions were a riot: between 5:2 and 6:0 ft., 150 to 200 lbs., kinky hair or long hair, thin or burly, etc., etc. I may be exaggerating a tad, but this suspect is truly everyman. The scary part is imagining these witnesses picking out someone from a line-up.

I had a scary spin-out on an icy Interstate last winter, and the more I told the story, the more the details differed. It's baffling as to how and why something in our subconscious seems to gradually edit and rewrite our memories.
