From a link included in the above reference I found the following. The story appeared a local Floridian newspaper on May 16, 2002:

Peterson's court date was scheduled for June 4, 2002. Interested to note what happened, I searched the Savannah newspaper to find out what happened. Curiously, the name Derek Lawrence Peterson didn't come up in any of the searches, including the original article.
And do note, from a Google search, the name doesn't show anywhere, not in AP, not in Reuters, not in UPI, not in USA Today, The Washington Post, New York Times ... not anywhere. Except the below:
