I think some people would be really offended by such a correction whether from a perceived friendly or unfriendly
Some people would be offended by an unfriendly telling them about it
It doesn't bother me- so any response would have been "correct" to me
I think the whole thing is totally audience dependent- and since you can't read minds, you can't know when it would upset your audience
But you can know how you feel
are you willing to have people annoyed at you over spelling? For some people the answer to that is a definitive yes. Some people spend most of their time on SI trying to annoy people- those people try everything. You are not (I think) one of those people. So you either need to be very careful whose spelling/usage you correct, or you don't do it at all.

That is my thinking on the matter.
