>>a "football" that is played with one's hands ? how utterly moronic !<<

Hello! Ever seen the "playbooks" used by football teams which detail the hundreds of possible plans of attack in their offense. It's usually as thick as a phone book and looks similar to wiring diagrams for the space shuttle.

I think that Americans who understand football see it as the ultimate combination of speed, power and strategy. To the non-football fan, it looks like a bunch of guys smashing around.

Nothing against soccer or rugby. Rugby, in particular, takes no back seat to any game in terms of the toughness of the players and violence of the action. But do understand that if unprotected rugby players attempted to "hit" with the same level of speed and disregard for the body as
football players are capable because of the armor, rugby matches probably wouldn't last more than 5 minutes. Just mo, of course.
